No Stopping Thomas Dale

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Thomas Dale, ranked third in the DigitalSports Top 10, defeated tenth-ranked Matoaca 2-0 in its home game on Tuesday night.

The Knights were led by their two star captains, senior midfielder Patrick Innes and junior midfielder Will Bates who each had a goal and an assist in the win.

The Knights dominated the Warriors from the beginning of the game by keeping possession of the ball and creating several dangerous scoring opportunities.

The first goal of the match came from one of many dangerous corner kicks by Innes, as he delivered a hard in-swinger to the near post where a crashing Bates met it with his head and deflected it into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

“I felt we came out kind of slow and sluggish,” Innes said. “We had a dozen corner kicks in the first half and couldn’t seem to score until Will got on the end of one. Once we scored, it lightened up the game and we were able to knock it around a bit.”

The game definitely opened up for Thomas Dale in the second half.

It only took three minutes for the Knights to score again.

This time it was Bates who would assist Innes on the goal as he slotted a nice through ball to Innes who was able to finish from six yards out to take a 2-0 lead.

The Knights continued to pressure the Warriors the remainder of the match and almost scored a few more but they could not seem to get their shots on frame.

Matoaca’s offense was no where to be found as they were shut out by the Knights defense who broke up every type of attack the Warriors created.

Thomas Dale remains undefeated at 11-0 this season and are looking forward to playing other power house squads such as Deep Run and Cosby.

“We are looking forward to Regionals,” Bates said. “Especially after losing to Cosby last year, we want to get back at them. As for Deep Run, we know a lot of those guys so we are looking forward to it.”

Thomas Dale Wins Late

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

The Thomas Dale Knights, ranked fourth in the DigitalSports Top 10, pulled off a late victory in Thursday night’s game to remain undefeated this season.

The Knights defeated the Prince George Royals 3-2 with an Allison Crouch goal with minutes left in the regulation.

Thomas Dale came out strong in the first half, taking the lead after just five minutes of play.

Senior midfielder Carrie Jaeckle took a free kick ten yards outside of the Royals box and blasted it into the net giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Knights continued to pressure the Royals defense resulting in many scoring opportunities.

Thomas Dale’s second goal came off a corner when senior Loren Favale got her head onto the end of a great corner kick by Jaeckle and drilled it into the net putting Thomas Dale up 2-0 at half time.

Prince George fought their way back into the game in the second half.

Senior forward Stacey *** scored a great goal from inside the box to get the Royals onto the score board and within one of the Knights with 14 minutes left to play.

The Royals pushed numbers forward and continued to run at the Knights defenders resulting in the equalizing score from senior defender Angel Woods who made a late run up the side crashing the back post and knocking the ball in with ten minutes remaining.

Thomas Dale goalkeeper Chrissy Dowlen was injured on the play trying to make the save as she hit the post hard.

After the long injury delay, Thomas Dale regrouped quickly as they looked to win the game.

The Knights created some dangerous opportunities on goal and finally, with minutes left in the match, Crouch found the back of the net winning the game for Thomas Dale.

Waldrop Drops Royals

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

CHESTER – You thought football was a game of inches? Softball is as well.

Two similar plays in the fourth inning turned out Thomas Dale’s way, as the Knights kept their unblemished record with a 1-0 victory over Prince George Thursday night in a crucial Central District contest.

The Royals (3-1 Central, 6-2), ranked fourth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, had ladies on second and third with no out in the top of the fourth inning.

After a pop out, a Lacey Waldrop pitch got away from catcher Sarah Heretick, putting the No. 5 Knights (6-0, 9-0) in a pickle.

An alert pinch runner in PG’s Stephanie Rodenberry bolted home from third base.

But Heretick found the yellow softball and chucked it to Waldrop, who tagged a sliding Rodenberry for the second out of the inning.

Waldrop got a strikeout to end the inning. She had 13 K’s on the evening, but her offensive game won the game for TD.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, PG’s terrific pitcher Lauren Vinson, who also had 13 strikeouts in one less inning of work, gave up a single to Waldrop after a long at-bat.

Then TD’s Lauryn Nanny jumped on Vinson’s next offering for a double, getting Dale’s own second and third situation with no out.

Deja vu happened within 10 minutes. Vinson’s pitch got by her catcher Ashley Lowe, just like Waldrop’s did earlier in the inning.

But Lowe couldn’t find it in time as Waldrop raced home for the game’s only score.

Two exact same situations. Two exact different outcomes. Ballgame.

“We had the opportunity as well and the ball ricocheted back a little further,” Prince George coach Pat Waguespack said. “I guess that’s just the luck of the bounce. Our ball didn’t roll very far away, but sometimes it’s hard to find. That’s a tough way to lose a game.”

Said Waldrop: “As soon as I saw the ball go past the catcher, I was just like, ‘I gotta go. We have to get on top.’ When I made it I was really happy.”

Waldrop and Vinson went pitch-for-pitch as expected. They both whiffed 13 batters, Vinson in one less inning of work.

Waldrop gave up two hits, Vinson three. The special part is that Waldrop is a freshman and Vinson a sophomore.

That’s good news for softball fans that have seven seasons worth of the fabulous hurlers left, but bad news for the girls that have to step in the box against them.

Speaking of seven, it had been seven seasons since a TD softball team walked off the diamond victorious over a PG team.

That pleases Dale coach Dennis Jones as he hopes his Knights can build on the victory.

“This is very big,” Jones said. “I feel like we don’t get a lot of respect, any of us south of the river. It’s all the Lee-Davis’ and Atlee’s. Which they are good teams. Hopefully this will give us a little bit more respect with those guys and hopefully we can keep it going.

“We still have to keep fighting. We have 11 more games after this. Long road. We’ll be all right. I have confidence in them.”
