Softball, 3/21/10: Preseason All-DS & Top 10

Preseason
All-DigitalSports
Softball Team

12
of the best in the Central Region.

Player of the year
*Lauren Vinson, Prince George,
Sr., Pitcher:
Led the Royals to the Central Region title last season. Threw 13 K’s already in a win over Lee-Davis.

Infielders

Brooke Blankenship, Deep Run, Jr.: Arguably the best all-around
player in the area. Will do some pitching this season.

Kaitlyn Cheek, J.R. Tucker, Sr.: Power hitter moves to first base.
Delivered 10 homers in ’09. Going to Queens in North Carolina.
Katie Christopher, Prince George, Jr.: Soft-spoken shortstop is in
her second year in the hot spot. Played big in Prince George’s region
title run in 2009.
Logan Tollison, Thomas Dale, Jr.: Hit nearly .500 in 2009, driving in 20 runs.

Heather Sink, Cosby, Sr.: Had a phenomenal 2009 hitting .554 with 46 hits and 15 stolen bases. A four-year starter.

Outfielders
*Kelly Foate, Deep Run, Sr.: Speed, bat and glove are strong. Can do
it all. 20 runs, 16 stolen bases last season.
Tori Higginbotham, J.R. Tucker, Sr.: A
live bat and range in the outfield
for a Colonial District contender.
*Rachel Houff, Lee-Davis, Jr.: Range in the outfield is limitless. Look for a more powerful bat from the lead-off spot this season.

Caitlin Underhill, Colonial Heights, Sr.: Batted .506 last season
with 18 RBI. Is always on base for the Colonials.

Catcher
Taylor Hall, Cosby, Jr.: Has a rocket arm and an even better
bat.

Utility

*Lacey Waldrop, Thomas Dale, Jr: Impressive in the circle, of course, but
Waldrop was one of Dale’s leading batters last season.
* – Was an all-DigitalSports pick in ’09.

Preseason Top 10
1. Prince George: Until someone knocks them off, the Royals are it. Vinson already helped stop one of the region’s finest in Lee-Davis.
2. Cosby: Seven starters return, including three entering their fourth year of varsity ball for coach Ray Jeter.
3. Thomas Dale: When you have Waldrop and a boatload of players back, you’ve got to be happy and in the top 3.
4. Lee-Davis: Preseason No. 1 in 2009 lost a bunch, but pitcher Kelly Heinz is a flamethrower and will have L-D in every game.
5. J.R. Tucker: A sleeper. The Tigers were young last year and are still young. Kelly Rice is a sophomore in the circle, Higginbotham and Cheek preseason all-DS.
6. Colonial Heights: The Central is strong. Savannah Phillingane is tough in the circle. Look out for 3B Josephine Knowles, who missed half of last season with injury.
7. Deep Run: The Wildcats lost a tough pitcher-catcher combo, but Blankenship and Foate should keep things rocking.
8. Matoaca: Coach Scott Driskill has eight starters back, few are seniors. Alyssa Zebrowski is the best Matoaca has to offer.
9. Midlothian: The Trojans always field a nice squad. Look out for catcher Rudy Edmunds this season.
10. Mills Godwin: The Eagles are always fundamentally sound. You don’t want to see them come Central Region playoff time.

Others
Atlee: Four years of pitching has graduated, but Atlee still has talent. Randi Farrar leads the way from first base.
Dinwiddie: Senior shortstop Carly Warfield (18 RBI in 2009) leads the Generals.
Douglas Freeman: Lizard Joynes provides four years of experience. Look out for Jacey Quarles.
Hanover: The Hawks are ridiculously young, and have to overcome injuries.
James River: Tiffany Yonta, Leah Powell and Lindsey Tuck are a nice trio.
Henrico: Two Jessicas, Burgess and Hendrick, can flat-out rake. Hit over .400 last season.
Hermitage: Kai-elle Steinruck is one of the best outfielders the region has to offer.
Monacan: The Chiefs have pitching (Megan Williams) but are looking for some offense in 2010.
Patrick Henry: Don’t sleep on the Patriots. Talent abounds at the plate, including sophomore sisters of Maggie Houge, Lindsay Tingler, and Sam Moore, also a terrific pitcher.

Legend: Spencer Randolph, 3/8/10

SPENCER RANDOLPH
Thomas Dale Knights

Bloomsburg University is getting a gem with Spencer Randolph.

The 6-3, 300-pounder led Thomas Dale’s vaunted offensive line from his tackle position, before signing with the Division II Pennsylvania school.

He posted 22 pancake blocks on the state championship season of Thomas Dale’s, including great performances against future West Virginia linemen Quinton Spain of Petersburg and Marquis Wallace of Varina.

Randolph also was stout defensively.

Legend: Greg Gallop, 3/8/10

GREG GALLOP
Thomas Dale Knights

There’s no question many things helped Thomas Dale to the Central Region and state Group AAA, Division 6 title.

One huge help? The offensive line, who jelled to open up holes for a myriad of backs.

Greg Gallop was one, a 6-1, 300-pound guard that was athletic enough to play on the defensive line as well, totaling six sacks on the season.

BOX SCORE

Thomas Dale 8 14 16 15 – 53

I.C. Norcom 10 13 21 11 – 55
Dale (22-5): Jordan 4, White 20, Turner 11, King 9, Green 6, Mason 0, Eaton 2, Williams 1. Totals: 16 20-27 53. 3-point goal: White.
Norcum (23-4): Canty 8, Theus 4, Finney-Smith 17, Mack 1, Anderson 21, Nicholson 0, White 2, Haskins 2. Totals: 15 18-29 55. 3-point goals: Anderson 4, Finney-Smith, Theus, Canty.

We’re back with Thomas Dale again, this time the boys, taking on I.C. Norcum.

Norcum is up 8-4 in the first period, 3:01 to go.

Andrew White finishes on the break, 2:31 left, Dale down two. White with a jumpshot, he’s looking good early.

Dorian Finney-Smith, the Eastern Region player of the year, knocks in two FTs as Norcum leads 10-8, 21 seconds to go after a bad Dale turnover.

Finney-Smith is a 6-7 junior, who mostly plays point guard for Norcum. In fact, most of Norcum’s key players are juniors.

SECOND QUARTER

White and Airek Green hit jumpers, Dale tied at 12 early.

Green spins one FT off the rim, second is good. Dale leads 13-12, first lead of the game.

Finney-Smith with a nice two-hand tip dunk, Norcum back up by one.

White with another jumper, up one. Decarlos Anderson breaks down Dale’s zone defense from the perimeter with a trey ball.

Malcolm King puts in one FT, Dale down one. King is having a tough time with Norcum’s height. Let’s see how he’ll adjust.

White follows Jeremy Canty’s jumper with one of his own. Dale trails by three, 21-18 with 2:29 left. Timeout Dale.

Canty is a Liberty commit and only a junior. White is off this time.

Myles Turner at the line for Dale. First is good on the one-and-one. Second is good, Dale down 23-22.

Big block by King to end the half as Dale trails by one. Leading scorers coming up!

For Dale – White 10 points, Turner 4. Norcum – Anderson 7, Canty 5.

THIRD QUARTER

Green’s steal and finish gives Dale a brief lead, then Anderson knocks in a trey and Finney-Smith gets a fastbreak jam. Norcum 30-26.

King drops in two under Finney-Smith’s block attempt. Green just missed a breakaway dunk, kind of like Quinton Spain of Petersburg did Friday.

Coach Eddie Goss is fuming. It turns into two FTs, Norcum up six after Anderson’s layup. Timeout Goss and Dale, 34-28, 4:48 to go.

Norcum’s pressure defense is getting to Dale.

It is starting to unravel for Dale, Anderson another trey ball, 37-28. White with a 15-footer. That’s like a layup for him.

So are 3-pointers for Norcum’s Anderson, he drills another, this time from the left corner.

Everyone is hitting treys for Norcum now, Finney-Smith buries one in transition. Dale calls a timeout in trouble, down 43-30 with King on the bench saddled with three fouls.

White drills a trey ball, Dale back within nine. Green at the line now, sinks the first, misses the second, Dale down eight.

Canty misses, Jordan with the board, pushes up and is fouled. Good news for Dale, it is in the bonus already, 40 seconds left in the third.

Jordan drills both FTs, down six. That’s how it stands at the end of three, as Norcum leads 44-38 with eight minutes to go.

FOURTH QUARTER

Norcum taking advantage of Rodney Williams. He’s guarding a quicker player, so with the lead, Norcum is holding the ball out.

Wasted a minute that possession and ended up with a FT from Finney-Smith, Norcum 45-38 as King comes in.

Williams puts in 1 of 2 FTs, Dale back to six down, 45-39. Finney-Smith back at the line, one FT, Norcum back up by 7.

Showing pressure now. Dale breaks it, King to White underneath for two, T.O. Dale, down five, 46-41, 4:41 on the clock.

Norcum’s going one for two at the line, while Dale’s getting two. Bodes well for the Knights, down four now.

Turnover Finney-Smith, he carries it. Coach Leon Goolsby doesn’t like the latest developments, calls a 30-second timeout, 3:38 to go.

King at the line now, first is good. Dale is shooting well, second is true. Knights down two, Finney-Smith back at the line. First is good. Second bounces in, Norcum up four.

Dale hits one FT from Turner, down three. Bad shot from Anderson, Turner runs it up and is fouled. First is good, 49-47 Norcum. Timeout. 2:43 left.

Turner swishes the second, Dale down one.

Finney-Smith turns it over, so do Turner. Anderson makes it a 3-point game. White shoots an airball on a game-tying 3. Norcum ball, 1:02 left, 51-48 Greyhounds.

My first time writing his name, Karmeron Mack at the line for two for Norcum. First is short. Second good.

King finishes, Dale down two. Green fouls out. Finney back at the line for two. First is true, up three. Second off. Dale ball.

Turner with a nifty layup, timeout Dale, 16.8 seconds left, down 53-52. This has been a good game for sure.

Theus is going to the line, King fouls out. 14.5 seconds. Theus drops one of two, 54-52, 14.5 seconds to go, Dale timeout. What should they do? I’d go for the win, hit White off a screen on a wing for 3. We’ll see what Goss thinks!

White on the curl, goes up and is fouled. He’ll get two shots, 6.6.

White misses first, knocks in second. Now Canty goes to the line, 5.4 left. Dale down one. Canty misses the first. Hits second.

Turner races up, gets a shoulder by, misses the tough shot, Norcum takes it, 55-53.

Welcome back to DigitalSports! Stephen Lewis back with you from William & Mary Hall in Williamsburg.

Thomas Dale and Princess Anne are warming up right now for the state Group AAA girls basketball quarterfinal.

This is the place you need to be to stay up-to-date on the contest.

The game should begin around 5:25 p.m.

FIRST QUARTER

Samisha Powell buries a trey to get the scoring started for Princess Anne. Now Amanda Andrades knocks in three.

Dale down 6-1 after a Taylor Bradley free throw. The Knights look nervous, haven’t been here before. The Cavs are state tourney vets, six semis, three titles.

Brianna Kincade drops in a jumper, PA 8-1. Now Elizabeth Williams, the all-everything center gets into the act, a three-point play for her forces a Dale timeout, down 11-1 with 4:31 to go.

Ka’lia Johnson scores inside, but Kincade answers. PA still up 10 early. Bradley with a nice jumper, Dale down 8.

Powell on the break, scores with Johnson’s foul. Misses FT though. 15-5 Cavs. Missed layup by Andrea Hobbs, PA runs it back the other way and finds Williams for two.

Monster block on Johnson from Williams. She has three blocks already.

Easy fast break score, Courtney Braxton from Andrades. PA dominating 19-7 after a jumper by Shawnee Sweeney to end the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

Nothing is going right for Dale. Four straight points for PA to start the quarter as Andrades and Jazmen Boone convert, 23-7 PA.

Alyssa Frye puts in a free throw for Dale, but Boone answers with two. Frye puts in a trey, Dale down 25-11.

Bradley hits a trey, Dale within 11. No boards for Dale that time, Williams with the putback. Williams with a fifth block. Only 12 minutes are gone from the game. WOW!

Braxton with a bonus shot, PA is destroying the zone defense. Hobbs gets a foul on Williams, her first.

Braxton with another 3-pointer, too many open perimeter shots for PA. Bradley with a reverse inside, she’s putting together a nice game.

Too big inside, Williams with another putback. Turnovers ******* Dale, down 34-17, 2:15 and counting.

Kincade with a jumper, they are shooting the ball incredibly from outside. Now Powell on the break, fouled by Johnson, her second.

Timeout Dale, 1:40 left, down 37-17. Bria Powell gets into the scoring act for PA, Williams registers her sixth block.

Now Johnson is at the line for the Knights. One FT goes down, PA 39-18.

Powell with an extra difficult shot in the lane to end the half, as Princess Anne dominated Dale 41-18 in the first 16 minutes.

Scoring leaders coming up! For PA – It is balanced, Williams with nine, Powell with eight, Braxton 7, Kincade 6. Williams has eight boards and seven blocks on her way to a ridiculous triple-double.

For Dale, Bradley has eight points as Dale is shooting 22 percent, PA 56.

THIRD QUARTER

Big news, Johnson gets injured on collision with Williams. Looks like a nose injury maybe, she’s out for now.

PA leads 43-18, 7:12 to go in the third period. Frye for trey, Dale trying to show life.

Frye for another 3-pointer, under 20 points now. Dale needs a lot more though, and tey get it, offensive foul on Powell.

Williams off a nifty feed from Powell, 45-24 PA. Johnson is back in the contest, good to see that. Timeout PA, 4:13 left.

Kortney Williams knocks in a three for Dale, 20-point lead for the Cavs. Now it is 17, Frye with another 3-pointer, off a pass from Johnson.

But Dale doesn’t get back, Boone makes them pay with one FT, 48-30.

Johnson hits a short jumper, then Hobbs hits on the break, Dale cuts into the lead, 48-34 with eight minutes left.

FOURTH QUARTER

Shawnee Sweeney misses a layup, but converts a jumper a possession later, Dale forces a PA timeout, 48-36.

Williams of PA responds with two, PA up 14, 5:57 to go.

That’s got to be 10 blocks now for the 6-3 Williams of PA. She just destroyed a Sweeney shot, basically cuffed it into her body. Unbelievable for the consensus No. 1 player in the Class of 2011 and Ka’lia’s AAU teammate.

Williams back at the line, the first is good, the second is off. PA up 15. Andrades puts in two FTs, PA back up 17.

Another block from Williams, but Frye recovers and gets two. 2:10 left. Elizabeth Williams, nice turnaround jumper, followed by a Sweeney layup.

Dale still down 15. It is all but over now, PA dribbling out the clock. Nice ball handling from Andrades. 30 seconds and counting.

Cavs win it, 57-42, great season for Thomas Dale. The Knights waited too long to turn it on. Williams had another great outing, triple-double for sure.

We’ll have stats soon! Don’t forget to check back for photos, videos and interviews!

Man, I’m trying to catch my breath from that girls game. Unbelievable. Stephen Lewis back with you.

Let’s hope the boys game is half as good. We have unbeaten, untied, seemingly unstoppable, No. 1 in the state Petersburg (26-0). Joining them is Central District breathren Thomas Dale.

Let’s see how things go down.

We’re about 25 minutes from the start of the contest.

FIRST QUARTER

Airek Green with a nifty move, Dale down 12-10 late in the first period.

Tyre Desmore picks up loose change and puts it in his pocket, 14-10 Petersburg after one.

Both teams look ready to play.

SECOND QUARTER

Petersburg ahead 19-10 with 5 minutes to go. DuVaughn Maxwell is playing a superb game thus far.

Dale’s star Andrew White is off on his shot. He hasn’t scored a bucket yet. Dale needs him to settle down.

Wave now ahead 20-10, timeout Dale coach Eddie Goss, 4:39 remaining in the first half.

2:37 left now, Dequantae Mason at the line for Dale, trying to cut the lead to seven points.

He does. P’Burg 21-14.

Sloppy first half for both teams, as Petersburg leads 27-18 at the half.

Malcolm King came up with a steal and conversion to end the half for the Knights.

Scoring leaders coming in a few minutes. Here we go! Petersburg – DuVaughn Maxwell 10 points, Frank Mason 7. Dale – King 6, White is 1 for 12 from the field right now, two points. Let’s see if he can rebound in the second half.

THIRD QUARTER

King starts the half off with a layup on the break. Petersburg coach Bill Lawson III doesn’t like what he sees, calls timeout.

White with a nice drive, can’t finish. Petersburg turns it over. Still sloppy play. Third time playing each other, maybe teams are feeling it out.

Petersburg is pressing to up the tempo, King finishes the break of press, Dale down five, 5:45 to go.

King just picked up his third foul, tough loss for the Knights. Rodney Williams enters.

White’s nightmare continues. I’m starting to feel bad for him. Petersburg is giving him nothing easy.

Maxwell inside for two, good pass from Kevin Green. Airek Green answers, Dale down seven, 31-24.

The lid is about to come off of this place! Frank Mason drops it back to Kevin Green who dunks on a Dale defender with two hands. Wave up 39-28. Goss quickly calls timeout.

Dale is hanging tough, handling Petersburg pressure. Now down five, 44-39 on a King putback. He’s having a helluva game.

That’s how it goes to the fourth period, Dale down five, 44-39.

FOURTH QUARTER

We have a tie game at 44 on a White three-point play. King picks up two straight assists.

Big trouble for Dale, King picks up fourth foul. I don’t agree with the call, 5:58 to go.

Spain plays Moses Malone missing a few layups, then Mason gets a steal and conversion, Burg back up four.

BIG BLOW! King fouls out trying to guard Quinton Spain. Let’s mark this point, it’s 48-46 when he goes out.

Spain hits one of two, then Rashaad Jordan turns it over for Dale. Burg 51-46, 4:21 to go.

Williams with a nice whirl and score around Spain. And 1. Let’s see if he can get three points…nope. Wave 53-48, 3:10 left.

1:49 left, Wave gets a three-point play from Maxwell, Du-V that is, 59-52 lead for Petersburg. Big play. Timeout Dale.

Frank Mason shooting one-and-one. Front end is true. Back end is nice, Burg up 61-54.

Now 62-56 with Kevin Green going to the line, 57.5 remaining. He hits the first. Second is off.

What’s going on? It’s Stephen Lewis back with you for the Central Region girls basketball final.

We’ve got a good one, the Cosby Titans, sporting a 25-2 record, 23-0 versus region competition, against unbeaten Thomas Dale (25-0).

Stick and stay for updates from this contest. Later tonight, we’ll have video highlights and interviews and a final box score as well.

Don’t move!

FIRST QUARTER

Ka’lia Johnson has her first foul for Dale, only 42 seconds into the contest. Let’s keep in eye on this, the Knights need her in the contest, still scoreless.

Until Becca Wann nails a 3-pointer for Cosby.

Johnson answers with a nifty two-point goal. She has a free throw, too, it’s good, tie game, 3-3 early.

Pitts too big inside, Cosby 5-3, 5 minutes left. Now Andrea Bertrand gets in the act with a trey ball. Cosby hot, 8-3.

Kelsey Conyers with an offensive rebound and score, answered by 3 from Alyssa Frye. Cosby 12-6, 3:00 to go.

Frye again, frying Cosby with another trey, 12-9 Cosby. Timeout Dale with 2:27 to go.

Conyers with another runner, Cosby 14-9. Wann has picked up her second foul, but picks up a fastbreak basket.

Johnson answers, Cosby 16-11. Wann puts in two FTs, Cosby ahead by 7 at the end of the first, 18-11 Cosby.

SECOND QUARTER

Bertrand and Conyers drill 3-pointers to open the quarter, 24-11 Cosby. Taylor Bradley puts in two for Dale.

Johnson’s back in and attacks for two, 24-15 Cosby.

Now Kaylor Nichols drops in a 3-pointer for Cosby, everyone is contributing for the Titans. WOW, what a look to Andrea Bertrand from Jazmin Pitts.

Johnson’s frustrated, timeout Dale, down 14 points with 5:11 to go in the half.

10 HUGE points already from Kelsey Conyers, 32-17 Cosby dominating.

Johnson is playing extremely hard, putback to bring Dale within 13.

No rebounding for the Knights. Bertrand with a putback and a chance at a three-point play…no good, but Wann gets the offensive rebound and two!

Cosby 36-19, until Frye buries another trey 36-22. Knights pull within 11, but coach Rachel Mead goes back inside to Pitts for two, with a chance at three, she misses another FT, 0-5 now.

Johnson with a pull-up, then forces a Bertrand turnover. Cosby leads 40-27 at the half. Dale needs to look at their defense while Cosby wants to keep Wann and Pitts from getting their third foul early in the second half.

Johnson and Frye have all but two of Thomas Dale’s points. Back with second half action in 10 minutes!

First-half scoring leaders: Dale – Frye 13, Johnson 12 (nine boards). Cosby – Bertrand 12, Conyers 10, Wann nine.

THIRD QUARTER

More of the same, two easy baskets for Cosby, 44-27 early.

Johnson goes to the bench with her third foul, trouble for Dale. Frye with a bucket, Dale still down 13 points, however.

Bradley scores on the break, then hits a 3-pointer in transition. 9-0 run says my intern Terrell Thompson, 3:49 to go, Dale down eight points. We might have a game.

Adriane Vaughan, a Cosby reserve, knocks in three. Cosby pulling away again, up 13.

Johnson to Shawnee Sweeney on the break, Dale down 10, 1 minute left. Johnson another sick drive, dale still down 10.

Pitts steps out for a 3-pointer! Oh my!!! KJ, looking, stutter, hits Frye, her 3 is long. No damage done either way, Cosby still ahead by 13 points at the end of three.

FOURTH QUARTER

Johnson for two, but Pitts answers. Dale can’t get consistent stops.

Johnson and Pitts are scoring at will for both sides, Dale still down 12 as Cosby’s offense is running well.

Defensive breakdown, Bertrand for an easy lay. Cosby up 63-49, 6 minutes. Frye, wow, she’s playing well, another two-pointer.

Uh-oh, Johnson picked up her fourth foul, 5:40 left.

No matter, she’s still taking over, two drives to the cup, a feed to Frye for two straight buckets, Dale down five points! We have a game, 4:16 to go, 65-60 Cosby.

Wann to the line, one-and-one. First is good, second is true. Cosby 67-60.

Pitts now has four fouls as Bradley goes to the line and hits the first. Second, too. Dale down five.

Johnson is ridiculous, but Bertrand’s going at her on foul trouble. Cosby ahead by five, 2:15 left.

Their freezing the ball, Wann hits an FT, then Johnson gets stripped by Nichols. Wann back at the line, Cosby up 72-66, 54.6 left.

First is good. Second off, Johnson with the board. Frye knocks in two FTs, Bertrand goes 1 for 2. Dale down five.

Sweeney hits from deep! Dale trails by three points, 74-71. 32 seconds left. I told everyone this will be a classic!

Pitts to the line, 30.5 seconds to go. She’s been off at the line, let’s she if she’s clutch.

She bounces one in, Cosby up two possessions. The same bounce on both shots, must be Cosby’s night.

Maybe not, Johnson down the lane again, whew, 76-73 Titans, 22.5 left. Time out Knights.

Bertrand turns it over. Out of bounds play, gets it back to Johnson, drive and kick for Frye. Nothing but net.

Dale frantic on defense, stops Cosby from getting a shot off. OT!!!

OVERTIME

Pitts rims out, Johnson with a sick crossover and hang, Dale leads 78-76! First lead of the game.

Wann up to the task, hits two FTs. Tie game.

Johnson again, this is ridiculous. She’s showing off now. Dale 80-78, with Pitts going to the line.

It rims out on the first. Second is true, Dale 80-79.

Johnson turns it over twice, Cosby up 83-80 on conversions off mistakes. Johnson pulls up for the tie, it’s short.

Wann knocks in one free throw, Cosby leads 84-80, 36 seconds to go. Sweeney bounces in another trey, 84-83 with 24.5 seconds left.

Did I say this would be a classic? Timeout Dale.

Knights send Nichols to the line. She hasn’t been there today. First is nice. Second rolls in. How about that, clutch play from Nichols. Cosby up 86-83, 21.9 to go. Timeout Titans.

Sweeney drives and loses it out of bounds.
