Some college quarterbacks can’t run the two-minute drill better than Varina quarterback Hermon Norrell did Friday night.
His calmness and clock management was key to Varina’s 20-14 overtime victory over Thomas Dale, ranked seventh in the latest DigitalSports Top 10.
The No. 1 Blue Devils received the ball with 56.7 seconds left at their own 25-yard line with no timeouts left, down 14-7.
Norrell found De’Chavon Hayes on a screen pass for 15 yards on second down.
Three incompletions later, Varina received a personal foul penalty on Thomas Dale for a late hit. New life for Norrell, 34 seconds at Dale’s 45.
Last week’s hero, Dondrey Pegeas, caught a 5-yard pass, then Norrell stopped the clock with an incompletion and misfired on another before Andre Wood (five catches, 89 yards, TD) pulled down a crucial fourth-down pass for 20 yards.
Norrell clocked the ball again and 4.5 seconds showed on the clock. One last play.
The senior QB stepped back and hit Pegeas in stride as he carried a few Knights into the end zone with no time remaining.
Sophomore kicker Cody McDaniel calmly stroked the extra point to force OT.
“Dondrey just ran a good slant. He cut it hard,” said Norrell, who threw for 249 yards and two TDs on 20-of-34 passing, with some incompletions just to stop the clock on the final drive. “I threw it to him, he caught it. He just went hard and scored.”
Dale wanted to do the same but Dashawn Bostic, a junior linebacker who joined the team two weeks ago, picked off a Demitrius Campbell pass on second down.
Hayes scored from a yard out on third down to complete the comeback for the Blue Devils (2-0).
“It’s Varina football,” coach Stu Brown said. “We’ve been there. We’ve been there before just like Thomas Dale. Our kids do not want to lose. We had our backs against the wall with some very good players out tonight [Trey $Johnson (hand), Jerel Harrison (ankle), QuVaughn Jones (wrist)].
“We had some young players step up and make plays, and I’m proud of them.”
So has to be Dale coach Vic Williams of his whole unit.
The Knights (1-1), playing their second OT game in as many weeks, had the perfect plan to derail the Blue Devils.
They ran five running backs, including the punishing Mike Edmunds (17 carries, 65 yards) and Demetrick Jackson (12 for 56), behind a strong offensive line of Sam Hartman, Ronnie Dunford, Adam White, Greg Gallop and Spencer Randolph with help from tight end Mike Dudley.
It ate up time and yards and Campbell surprised the Blue Devils with two aerial strikes for scores, one a 52-yarder to Dudley, and another on the very next possession to Brandon Burton on a slant route that led to Dale’s 14-0 lead.
“We want to win them all and beat the good teams,” said Williams, who had a few official calls stick in his craw after the contest. “That was a good team.”
