* Raiders Hit Stride: Atlee had a tough first half against Hanover. But the next 10 quarters have been pretty good.
The Raiders took the Midlothian tournament, topping Colonial Heights and downing Capital District mate Highland Springs by 10.
Sydney Henderson, Richelle Price and Britt Hill are on top of their games right now.
If Taylor Henderson, Taylor Ashcraft and others can be consistent, the Raiders will be very tough.
* Dominion Still Ridiculous: L.C. Bird and Monacan jousted as the Skyhawks came out with a 50-46 victory.
It’s only a sign that the Dominion District is still super tough. Cosby has extraordinary talent led by U.Va. commit Jazmin Pitts.
Midlothian, Manchester and Huguenot – with new coach and former Falcons star Bo Jones Jr. – are no slouch, either.
* Capital Not Far Behind: Don’t overlook the Northside’s toughest district.
The Capital has potential with Atlee, Hanover, Henrico and Highland Springs. Atlee is the district favorite, but your guess is as good as mine as to who will finish second.
The trio all have talent, like Hanover with Chelsea Coward (Longwood) back and Kim Browning (UMBC), both Division I signees.
Highland Springs boasts Dashon Ross, a Norfolk State recruit. Kyra Coleman just dropped 27 points and Takeisha Jeffries is a shooter from outside.
Never discount the Warriors’ run-and-gun style, especially since Elaine Derricott is available the whole semester.
* Surprise, Surprise: Patrick Henry is 2-0 heading into a bout with Mills Godwin Tuesday, the Colonial favorite.
Sophomore guard Taylor Huber had 37 points against JM and then 21 in an upset of Deep Run. Katie Anderson led the Patriots in the OT win over the Wildcats with 30 points. Oh, she’s a freshman.
Former PH star and coach Leslie Nuckols has a young, but good team on her hands.
The Eagles, with new coach Mark Seidenberg back on an Eagles basketball sideline, look good early with solid wins over Manchester and Henrico, two top 10 contenders.
* Wave Back: It’s been a few years since Petersburg was a dominant girls team, but they may be on their way back after a narrow, one-point loss to Meadowbrook in the opener.
Coach Robert Claiborne‘s team could be in the mix with Thomas Dale, who has yet to play a game, and the aforementioned Monarchs.
* Private Power: Trinity Episcopal is 3-1 on the young season, falling to Hampton Roads Academy in its own tournament championship.
Jill Brown and Victoria Smith have led the way.
