Baseball, 4/27/10: Matoaca 7, Dale 2

Austin Kilbourne launched a mammoth two-run homer in the first inning, and Matoaca poured in four runs in the sixth inning to stop nemesis Thomas Dale 7-2 in baseball Tuesday.

Cory Ramsey pitched a solid five innings striking out seven for the Warriors, who received two RBI from Zach Jordan and another RBI from Tyler Reed.

Ryan Moore provided pop at the dish for the Knights, drilling a solo homer.

But the Warriors got the win, this unit’s first over Dale, moving to 6-0 in the Central District. Dale dropped to 3-3.

“Beating them is one of our favorite things to do,” Kilbourne said, “because we haven’t done it much since I’ve been here.”

Boys soccer, 4/27/10: Dale 2, Matoaca 1 (OT)

In recent years, the Central District boys soccer champion was a foregone conclusion.

Thomas Dale was it.

But the Knights, though still talented, were not the runaway favorites coming into 2010 with Matoaca loaded and Meadowbrook surprisingly good.

Still, Dale is unbeaten in the district after one time through the schedule, stopping Matoaca 2-1 Tuesday night in overtime.

Sophomore forward Antonio Carrabotta struck before fans got well adjusted in their seats for the Knights.

“Antonio’s been great,” Dale coach Mark Fowler said. “He’s quick, strong and big. It was a clearance that he just ran under. He outpaced the back four, caught on the end of it and slotted it nicely past the keeper [Spencer Koch].

“He can do that all day.”

So can Matoaca’s Mason Page, who played forward for the first 20 minutes but was getting all of Dale’s defensive attention.

So Warriors coach Corey McConville moved the future Old Dominion player to midfield.

It worked, as Matoaca started earning solid scoring opportunities, and got fouled in the box in the 23rd minute.

Page beat Dale keeper Bill Groben to the top right for a 1-1 tie that lasted through regulation because of great saves by both keepers.

But a few minutes into the first 5-minute OT period, Dan Lauretano put in a nice cross that Matoaca’s Thomas Hartka booted pass his own keeper, trying to beat Louden Phillips to the spot.

The Knights held on from there to move to 7-0 in district play, 8-1 overall. Matoaca dropped to 5-2, 6-3.

“I was just looking to play a dangerous cross so we can get a head in,” Lauretano, a sophomore, said. “I got lucky with it.”

Nothing is lucky about Dale’s Central District run.

Matoaca       1 0 0 0 – 1
Thomas Dale 1 0 1 0 – 2

TD: Carrabotta, own goal
Saves: Koch (M) 6; Groben (TD) 4

CHESTERFIELD – It had been five years since the South had earned a win in the 804 All-Star Game.

They were due and knew it, soundly defeating the North 106-90 Saturday night at Matoaca High School.

An 8-point halftime lead ballooned to 20 quickly as the South’s athleticism and size underneath was too much.

Five South All-Stars reached double figures, including three paint monsters: game MVP Du’Vaughn Maxwell (18 points, eight boards, four blocks), Derrick Cates (15 points, 11 boards) and J’Quan Daily (11 points).

The advantage got as big as 27 before the North started hitting some 3-pointers it desperately needed to win.

Travis McKie led the North with 18 points, Kevin Gill 16 and Robert Thurston 11. Jake McGee put in nine points in only a first-half of action.

Sean Brown had an outstanding game with 16 points, 12 in the first half. Sean Armstrong chipped in with 13 points for the South.

Softball, 4/15/10: #1 Prince George 4, #2 Dale 2

by Terrell Thompson
Virginia State Intern

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George got an outstanding performance from its star pitcher Lauren Vinson, who finished the game with 13 strikeouts and two hits at the plate.

Although Vinson gave a great performance the Royals were down 2-1 coming into the bottom of the 6th.

“You have to play through tense situations in order to win in tense situations,” said Prince George coach Pat Waguespack. “We knew we had to put it all out there if we wanted to win.”

Katie Christopher‘s clutch play turned out to be the determining factor in the
Royals 4-2 victory over Thomas Dale.

She came to the rescue with a two-run double to put the Royals up 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th.

Vinson was one of the runners driven in by Christopher’s double.

Christopher then went on to put the Royals up 4-2 when she scored due to a passed ball at home plate.

Thomas Dale put up a tough fight as Logan Tollison hit a two-run home run to put the Knights up 2-1 in the top of the 6th.

Lacey Waldrop also had a good game, finishing with nine strikeouts. But it wasn’t enough to stop the Royals from taking the victory.

Prince George 000 013 0 – 4 6 0

Boys Tennis, 4/12/10: Preseason All-DS & Top 10

Preseason
All-DigitalSports
Boys Tennis Team

6 of
the best in the Central Region.

Player
of the year
*Hunter Koontz, Deep Run, Jr.:
Great all-around game. Seasoned with plenty of battles with last year’s region champ Kyle Parker.

Others

*Arjun Venkatasubramanian, Henrico, Jr.: Took nine games from Kyle Parker in the region quarters in 2009. Can flat-out play.

Zach Carl, Douglas Freeman: Another Rebels standout with loads of talent.

Edgar Vitkovski, Mills Godwin: Has academics in order, now brings a powerful game back.

*Evan Charles, Deep Run, Jr.: Small in stature, but very tactical. Frustrates his opponent with his consistent game.
*Tyler Carey, Cosby, Jr.: Another small option with a big game. Third year as Cosby’s No. 1.

Top 10 Poll
1. Deep Run (3-0): Wildcats are loaded with nearly same top six from last year. Stefan Hinds steps in at No. 3.
2. Mills Godwin (3-1): Big-time pickup with Vitkovski back. Never count the Eagles out.
3. Cosby (7-0): Carey and Dominic Bullano lead a team still void of many seniors.

4. Henrico (6-0): The Warriors have come out of nowhere to take control of the Capital early.
5. Maggie Walker GS (5-0): Lee Kelley’s squad scares Deep Run coach Salman Parvaiz
6. Atlee (6-1): Shao-Wei Tu is one of the best in the region.
7. J.R. Tucker (3-1): Tigers will fight to stay afloat in Colonial, but could fight for district honors in any other district.
8. Prince George
(4-0):
The Royals are always good. Can they hold off the Knights for another district crown with Scott Bristow the lone regular back?
9. James River
(5-1):
Josh Bortell, Sean Doughtery and Jason Burkholder make a nice lineup.
10. Thomas Dale (4-1): Austin Hamilton and Bruce Li lead the Knights.
