Girls Tennis Spring Sensations

A few members of the DigitalSports staff was supposed to challenge Godwin’s girls tennis ladder, but never got the chance to.

That would have been tough enough, but we would never want to challenge this top six, led by Godwin’s Katie Blow and Nicole Parker.

Elena Rusu is the third Colonial District player on the team.

Then the three other districts get representatives in Matoaca’s Darya Uzzell (Central), Atlee’s Rebekah Ferguson (Capital) and James River’s Sarah Stafford (James River).

Boys Tennis Spring Sensations

I wouldn’t be surprised if the all-DigitalSports boys tennis team never dropped a game.

Playing at No. 1 for the squad would be Mills Godwin’s Kyle Parker, the DigitalSports boys tennis player of the year.

Parker was unstoppable this past season with his impressive play and is only a junior.

Eric Shulman (Deep Run), Kevin Calhoun (Mills Godwin), Zach Carl (Douglas Freeman), Shao Wei Tu (Atlee) and Jacob Bean (Hanover) would make up the rest of a team filled with serious talent.

Of course our top-ranked doubles team would be Parker and Calhoun. The pair have been runners-up in the state Group AAA tournament the past two years.

Softball Spring Sensations

This softball team is really a dream.

It all starts with player of the year Courtney Long. We’d play her all over the diamond until she gets tired.

We have five pitchers who’ll rotate and shouldn’t give up any hits with their array of pitches, led by Lacey Waldrop of Thomas Dale, who went 18-1 this season. The only person to have more strikeouts than her is on the team in Lauren Vinson of Prince George.

Throw in Cosby’s Whitney Haller, Midlothian’s Krista Townsend and Hanover’s Lisa Puryear, and you have a college-type lineup.

Backing the quintet is catcher Erin Anderson of state semifinalist Deep Run, Stacy Snellings at first of Mills Godwin, Midlothian’s Cay Manuel and Prince George’s Caitlen Manning will handle the middle infield, and Brianna Bertovich is letting nothing get by at third.

In the outfield gobbling up everything is Hanover’s Amanda Woolard, Atlee’s Samantha Kandravi and Cosby’s Brittney Burgess.

Lacey Waldrop, 2008

Wow, only a freshman huh?

Lacey Waldrop took the Central Region by storm, registering the area’s best earned-run average (0.24) and compiling a ridiculous 223 strikeouts, second to Prince George counterpart Lauren Vinson.

She went 18-1 for the Knights who were unbeaten for the season until meeting state semifinalist Deep Run in the region quarters.

Waldrop dropped some nice numbers at the plate, too, hitting .415.
