Baseball Spring Sensations

Whether you want great pitching, power hitting or phenomenal defense the all-DigitalSports baseball team has it.

Our player of the year Austin Stadler (James River) would lead the way on offense as he is one of the most feared hitters in the Central Region.

Stadler would play first base but would also join a tremendous pitching rotation featuring Cosby’s Ronnie Shaban, James River’s Daniel Marrs, Hanover’s Jake Mayers and Henrico’s Seth Cutler-Voltz.

Cosby’s Jake Lowery is our choice to get behind the plate and catch the hurlers.

With Laine Denton (Hanover) at second base, Reed Gragnani (Mills Godwin) at shortstop and Ryan Parker (Cosby) at third it is unlikely many ground balls would be getting out of the infield.

Mills Godwin’s Travis Lane, Manchester’s Blake Hauser and Prince George’s Jackie Bradley form an outfield with speed and strong arms.

And Matt Gwaltney of Matoaca would be the final piece as the designated hitter.

Boys Soccer Spring Sensations

Imagine the opposing team’s faces if the all-DigitalSports boys soccer team showed up to play a match.

The first Spring Sensation they would notice would be player of the year Brian Ownby from Deep Run.

The forward has play making abilities that make him the ultimate offensive threat.

Ownby would be joined up top by Monacan’s Hunter Cheatham and Lee-Davis’ Eduardo Lopez. Both can really make things happen with a soccer ball.

The midfield would be controlled by all-around players Ben Jessee (Cosby), Will Bates (Thomas Dale), Patrick Innes (Thomas Dale) and Bryan Wharton (Deep Run).

Douglas Freeman’s Sean Healy, Deep Run’s Zach Summers and Cosby’s Colin Fitzpatrick make up an intimidating defense that fews ball would get past.

But if one did Deep Run keeper Cameron Murray would surely come up with a big save.

Thomas Dale Falls Short

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Thomas Dale’s fantastic season ends in the state Group AAA boys soccer semifinals.

The Knights were defeated by Northern Virginia powerhouse, Robinson High School 1-0 in Friday night’s first semifinal matchup at Westfield High School.

Robinson forward Alex Makcumbi scored the winning goal for the Rams with fifteen minutes left in regulation to advance to the state finals where they will meet the Deep Run Wildcats, who won their semifinal matchup against Kecoughtan 6-0.

Both teams came out fired up in the first half, as the game went back and forth with some great scoring opportunities.

Thomas Dale forward Patrick Innes came very close to putting the Knights up a goal, when he was able to beat two defenders in the box and rip a shot on goal from just inside the six-yard box that was saved by Adrian Dominguez.

Robinson created some dangerous opportunities of their own in the first half.

Midfielder Eli Hajjar did an excellent job of picking out his forwards from the center of the park which resulted in some dangerous shots and headers on goal.

The match opened up in the second half, as the Rams continued to pressure the back line of the Knights defense.

Robinson forced several threatening corner kicks and with fifteen minutes left, took advantage of one.

Hajjar delivered a hard in swinger that was taken down and put on goal by forward Andrew Teran.

Makcumbi was able to control the rebound and place a shot into the upper corner to give Robinson the 1-0 lead.

As time ran out, the Knights desperately pushed numbers forward in attempt to find an equalizer.

Thomas Dale almost got its wish with under five minutes in regulation, when Will Bates blasted a shot past the Rams goalie but was denied as the ball was cleared off the line by the Rams defense.

Robinson went on to hold the lead and take the victory ending Thomas Dale’s hopes of another state title.

Thomas Dale 0 0 – 0
Robinson      0 1 – 1

R: Makcumbi
Records: Thomas Dale (21-2); Robinson (13-4-3)

Football Weightlifting

So often, the bigger, stronger football players are left out of offseason competition.

Not this past week.

Lee-Davis, Douglas Freeman, Thomas Dale and Dinwiddie’s strongest players participated in two lifting competitions.

The Confederates hosted their first annual Push-Pull Competition,
equipped and officiated by AAU and the Virginia Powerlifting
Association.

Douglas Freeman came out on top in team competition. The overall individual winner was Vaughn Robinson of Thomas Dale.

Three L-D players set AAU world records in Kenny Jones (16-17 year-olds and 220 pounds, 518-pound dead lift), Matt Doty (14-15 year-olds and 242 pounds, 474-pound dead lift) and Matt Marlowe (17-18 & 198 pounds, 508-pound dead lift).

“We want to thank all of the support staff from AAU and the Virginia Powerlifting Association,” Lee-Davis coach Jason Meade said. “We will have another competition around the same time and hope to have a larger turnout.”

Above results are PDF files.

Dinwiddie won the Steel Factory Invitational Powerlifting Meet this past Saturday.

Individually, Jason Ampy took three first-place spots, followed by Bradley Johnson, who had two firsts and a third.

Speaking of Johnson, the 6-2, 200-pound linebacker with 4.5 speed in
the 40-yard dash, is racking up scholarship offers from some of the top
schools in the nation.

Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Maryland, Duke, South Carolina, Richmond
and East Carolina have all offered the all-region tackler.

Generals wide receiver Sam Haskins (6-5, 210 pounds) has garnered offers, too, with Delaware and Minnesota wanting his services.

In more Generals football news, Steffon Luccess and Andrew Wagy
will both play for Ferrum. Luccess was second-team all-district at
defensive line and Wagy is an all-district talent at linebacker.

Another linebacker, Jimmie Simmons (honorable mention all-region and metro) is going to Bridgewater.
