Boys basketball, 11/30/09: Preseason All-DS

Preseason All-DigitalSports
Boys Basketball Team

13 of the best ballers in the Central Region.

Player of the year
** Travis McKie, John Marshall, 6-7, Sr.:
I’ve written enough about him to fill a book. You know it all. He’s signed with Wake Forest, see his highlight video here.

Guards
Chris Cook, Lee-Davis, 5-10, Sr.: The best player you probably haven’t heard about. Put in 17 points per game last season.
Greg Lewis, Hanover, 6-0, Jr.: Smooth player who will be the focal point for defenses this season. Three-year varsity starter.
Tahir Little, John Marshall, 5-10, Jr.: The speedy point guard has a full year to run the show for the Justices.
Ken Pankey, L.C. Bird, 6-0, Sr.: One of the top shooters in the area, bar none.
Andrew Simmons, Meadowbrook, 6-0, Sr.: Four-year varsity starter looking for big year.
Kris Walden, Henrico, 6-0, Jr.: With Trey Davis and Justin Coleman departed, look for Walden to step up his offensive production.

Forwards
Sean Armstrong, Monacan, 6-5, Sr.: Athletic player is one of the best the Dominion District is returning.
Pedro Berrios, Hopewell, 6-4, Jr.: Steady, heady player with a lot of skills. Good shooter and passer.
Du’Vaughn Maxwell, Petersburg, 6-5, Sr.: With three terrific seniors gone, Maxwell is one of the main cogs back. Averaged 11 points and six boards as a junior.
* David Robinson, Cosby, 6-4, Sr.: Defending Dominion District player of the year lights up scoring columns; 22 points per game last season. Headed to Longwood.
Andrew White, Thomas Dale, 6-5, Jr.: White’s versatility and open floor ability is a problem for opponents. Look for a much more explosive finisher at the rim.

Center
Matt Gorski, Cosby, 6-11, Jr.: Put in 12 a game as a soph. Light years better than his freshman season. Brother Nick is a freshman, and already 6-6.

* – Was an all-DigitalSports pick in ’08-’09.
** – Two-time all-DigitalSports selection.
Note: Private school players are not eligible. Benedictine’s Michael Gbinije and Trey Davis, and Collegiate’s Jake McGee, all Division I recruits, would all be on this team.

Field hockey, 11/10/09: Lakeland 2, Thomas Dale 0

by Stephen M. Lewis

A fourth straight state Group AAA field hockey appearance resulted similarly for Thomas Dale.

The Knights focused on defensive rather than offense, and looked nervous throughout the first 30 minutes as Lakeland of Suffolk stopped Dale 2-0 in the quarterfinals at Maggie Walker Governors School.

“I think sometimes it’s us being out of our element and being nervous,” Dale coach Beth Jaeckle said. “I don’t understand why that happens.”

Dale’s swagger went out of the window as the Central Region champion watched the Eastern Region runner-up control possession in the first half.

The Cavaliers struck with 16:51 left in the first half on a perfect penalty corner.

Kendall Combs put it in play, Morgan McCaw slid it to the left to Kelsey Smither and Smither put a nice cross through to Jennifer Hedrick for the one-goal advantage.

The lead and play would be similar the rest of the half as both coaches were unhappy.

“I would’ve preferred not to wait until the second half to get our second goal,” Lakeland coach Tara Worley said. “We play a much cleaner game than this. I felt the kids adjusted [to the surface].”

The Knights came out for the second half with a pinch more aggressiveness, but Lakeland was in control.

At 23:35, Smither added a goal to her assist, off of another penalty corner (Lakeland 12 corners, Dale two).

Knights keeper Savannah Cummings (five saves) had no chance as Smither fired from point-blank range.

Late, the Knights scrapped its timid play and finally started to get some shots on goal behind nice runs from Hannah Robbins and free hits from Kristen Carter.

Just before the two-minute mark, Anna Rollins just missed an open goal.

The Knights peppered Cavs keeper Marissa Betkowski to no avail.

“We didn’t have the ball enough at all,” said Jaeckle, a proponent of team play featuring short passing. “Individual skills always seem to get us. Maybe we need to work on those more.”

Lakeland      1 1 – 2
Thomas Dale 0 0 – 0

Hedrick, Smither
Saves: Betkowski (L) 5; Cummings (TD) 5

Football, 11/6/09: Dale 35, Meadowbrook 34

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

Post Flag 8 Dig.

It’s the play that completed Thomas Dale’s improbable comeback victory over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Meadowbrook, a 35-34 tear-jurking triumph Friday night to get a leg up in a taut Central District race.

“We knew if we got the ball back at the end of the game that we were going to win,” Dale quarterback Demitrius Campbell said.

With 10:14 left in the contest, the Knights trailed 34-21 after Andre Coble‘s 17-yard scamper, a 13-point margin because of a missed extra-point.

Campbell led an eight-play, 74-yard drive, capped by a 30-yard strike to Ariek Green (three catches, 102 yards, 2 TDs) on a fourth-and-5 play. 34-28 Meadowbrook with 5:51 to go.

As explosive as the Monarchs had been all game, it seemed they would have no problem running out the clock or perhaps scoring again as Coble and Domico Phillips (20 carries, 186 yards two TDs) were ripping up the turf.

But Dale’s defense rose to the occasion, handing the ball back to Campbell, who was on his way to a school legend-making 14-of-20 for 215 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a two-minute drive to live for.

At 3:17, he got a 8-yard bolt from Demetrick Jackson (64 rushing yards, TD). From there, Campbell handled the ball each play.

He hit Brandon Burton (eight catches, 101 yards) for nine yards. Campbell, also a basketball player, took off among Meadowbrook pressure on third down for a crucial new set of downs.

With his favorite receiver seeing plenty of coverage, TE Mike Dudley, he went back to Burton twice, for six yards and then a 15-yarder that got Dale down to the 15-yard line.

Time out, Vic Williams, Thomas Dale coach.

Post Flag 8 Dig. It was time for Dudley to get open.

The tight end came underneath the coverage smack dab in the middle of the field. Campbell stuck the pigskin on him like a bug to a windshield for the 15-yard TD.

Anthony Prevost completed a 5-for-5 effort on extra points as Dale, ranked sixth in the DigitalSports Top 10, moved to 6-0 in the Central District with a visit to Matoaca on tap for the season finale.

A win would clinch a Division 6 playoff berth. A loss would make things murky.

“We haven’t got it yet. We have to beat Matoaca,” said an emotional Williams. “There’s no words to describe [this feeling].”

Meadowbrook faces Petersburg (5-4), a team looking to sneak in the Division 5 playoffs and is coming off a 49-0 romp over Colonial Heights behind playmaker Kevin Green.

Let the playoff controversy begin again in D-6, as a one-loss Meadowbrook team could be left out behind a two-loss Dale squad that learned from its previous losses to L.C. Bird and Varina, who could both be Division 6 playoff bound.

“My team worked hard since week three when we lost to Bird,” Campbell said. “I couldn’t have done it by myself. If I’m going to be the leader of the team I can’t doubt my teammates.”

Or his coaches. Or his plays.

Region semis, 11/4/09: Thomas Dale 2, MWGS 0

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

Thomas Dale had a tough road to *** to get back to the Central Region final.

Job completed.

The Knights stopped Maggie Walker GS 2-0 at Clover Hill Wednesday night to reach its fourth straight region field hockey final behind a stout defense and opportunistic offense.

Dale had to beat James River, ranked second in the final DigitalSports Top 10, in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Maggie Walker in the semis.

Now No. 1 Cosby awaits after dispatching of Mills Godwin 2-1 in the first semifinal. The teams will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. back at Clover Hill as both teams have combined for 23 straight wins without a loss.

“We’re really excited about playing Cosby because we have never played them,” Dale’s elite defender Anna Rollins said. “We know we are a really good team so we can definitely play our best against them.”

Dale did their best to get penalty corners often, getting twice as many as Maggie Walker.

It seemed like the whole first half Green Dragons were stuck in their cage while Hannah Robbins passed the ball in play.

But MWGS stopped every one in the first half. It was a top-of-the-circle blast that killed them.

Kristen Carter continued her red-hot play with a shot that beat Virginia Young as Dale took a 1-0 lead into break only a minute before halftime.

Dale would scratch again in the 46th minute, a breakaway that Robbins deposited off a nice lead from Rollins.

The Green Dragons never got off the mat, though co-Central Region player of the year Cassie Turnage had a standout night in the midfield.

“We were really excited about it,” said Green Dragons coach Paige Hawkins, as MWGS lost to Dale early in the season and tied the Knights about two weeks ago. “The evening is enough to be excited about. We played flat. We didn’t play like we did last time.

“We’ve been talking about being confident in ourselves as a team … we’ll be back. Don’t shut the door on the Dragons.”

Region field hockey, 11/2: Dale 3, James River 1

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

Two Goliaths of Central Region field hockey entered, Thomas Dale left out with a 3-1 victory over James River in the quarterfinals Monday afternoon.

Dale got two first-half goals from scoring machine Hannah Robbins, withstood a strong second-half response from the Rapids and looked forward to Wednesday’s semifinal.

“It feels so great to get that over with,” Robbins said. “We knew we had to win it. We met like two hours before the game so we can get ready and get pumped. We really wanted to win and we definitely gave it our all.”

Robbins was ready, striking twice before the Rapids got much offense going.

The second goal was courtesy the powerful stick of Kristen Carter. The midfielder puts some high mph on her shots.

This one bounce right to Robbins on the left side of the goal. She snuck it past on the right for a 2-0 lead going into the break.

During the 10-minute stoppage, James River coach Slade Gormus laid her motivation on thick for her Rapids.

“That’s what we said. You know, to step up and play,” said Gormus, who believes her team’ psyche was damaged by losses to Collegiate, Cosby and Clover Hill earlier in the season. “I’ve seen us go from so, so strong early in the season to our first time we’ve seen it go backwards. Mentally, I think some things happened that [affected our play].”

The Rapids put up a wall defensively at the beginning of the second half, kept play on their half of the field and executed.

Jessica Wert blasted a ball into the circle that ricocheted to Paige Carnohan.

The senior swept a ball in for that sweet board sound as the Rapids put a little worry into the Knights.

Carnohan was at it again, putting a nice cross through minutes later, but the Rapids couldn’t convert.

At 16:05 Thomas Dale coach Beth Jaeckle halted play.

“I was nervous,” an honest Robbins said. “We knew after we did that they would get right back into the game. We had a little timeout and we got back together.”

It worked.

Only three minutes later, Carter stroked another powerful shot in that Kim Church redirected as Dale moved on to a matchup with Maggie Walker GS on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the region semifinals.

Red-hot Cosby and Mills Godwin kick off the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. The winners receive a bid to the state Group AAA tournament, a place the three-time region champions are familiar with.

“Definitely play like we did today, but even more,” Carter said. “Working as a team is what got us here.”
