Excuse me if your computer screen is wet. I’m drooling right now.

Thomas Dale’s Ka’lia Johnson and the Knights and Cosby’s Becca Wann and the Titans will battle in the Central Region girls basketball final Monday, March 1 at 6 p.m. at VCU’s Siegel Center.

The aforementioned players are sensational, routinely stuffing stat sheets with points, rebounds and assists, leading their teams to undefeated Central Region records.

One team will get a loss Monday, though, and have to travel in the state Group AAA tournament. The winner stays home for the ultimate tournament that begins Friday.

“It’s going to be a war,” Cosby coach Rachel Mead said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. Two really good teams, the two best teams in the region are playing for the championship.”

Johnson, a junior and future Duke Blue Devil, and Wann, a senior headed to Richmond to play basketball and soccer, are not the only players worth admission in this contest.

Let’s start with Dale.

Alyssa Frye, a College of Charleston signee, led Dale with 21 points in a dominating 75-49 defeat of Huguenot in the region semifinals.

Then there’s Andrea Hobbs, one of the elite shooters in the area. She had 16 points in Dale’s 25th win without a loss this season.

“There’s a lot at stake with the whole undefeated thing,” Johnson said. “But we can’t let that get to our head. It’s only big dogs now.”

The Titans boast Virginia-bound Jazmin Pitts (15 points, 12 boards in semis) and consummate scorer Andrea Bertrand, who poured in a game-high 28 points as Cosby cruised over Highland Springs, 76-44 in the semis.

But things will be a little tougher Monday.

“All season we’ve been anticipating that we would both be here,” Wann said. “Of course, when you think Dale, you think Ka’lia. She’s an awesome player and it’s going to be tough to stop her.

“The anticipation of the game is going to be awesome. It’s going to be worth everything that everybody’s been expecting.”

A win could never be bad, or could it?

Meadowbrook turned back Thomas Dale 89-77 in the Central District semifinals a week ago after the Knights had won the previous two meetings this season.

It was all the motivation the Knights needed to dispatch of the Monarchs 76-61 in the Central Region semifinals Friday at VCU’s Siegel Center.

“We put that score up and said we gave it to them,” Dale coach Eddie Goss said. “We felt like they really didn’t beat us and we beat ourselves.”

Few teams could beat Dale on this night, as the crimson clad squad registered a 24-8 first quarter that effectively put the game away.

Meadowbroook played tight quarters from there on out, but the damage was done as Andrew White was on his way to a 30-point, nine-rebound performance.

“I just wanted to attack. They had been on me all year about settling for the jumpshot,” White said. “Early I found some openings on [Marvin] King-Davis. He’s a tall defender, so I just wanted to try to go at him a little more than I usually would, and it ended up paying off.”

White got ample support from senior Malcolm King, who turned in 20 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. Myles Turner put in 10 as well for the Knights, and Airek Green added nine.

For Meadowbrook, Jaquan Daily wrapped 17 points up with 18 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end. Andrew Simmons dropped 19 points for the team lead.

Now Dale moves on to an all-Central District region championship with unbeaten Petersburg (26-0) on deck, Monday, March 1 back at the Siegel at 8 p.m.

“We’ve got to play within ourselves,” Goss said. “We’ve got to make sure that we take care of the ball on every possession, that we defense the ball on every possession. That’s what they do.

“So we’ve got to match their intensity.”

Boys basketball, 2/9/10: #3 Dale 86, #5 M’Brook 80

A 20-5 run to end the third quarter and start the fourth put Thomas Dale over Meadowbrook 86-80 in a high-scoring Central District affair Tuesday afternoon.

Down 60-57 on two free throws by Meadowbrook’s Marvin King-Davis (team-high 19 points), the Knights continued their hot shooting while MBK went cold and threw in a couple of turnovers.

Michael Eaton scored five points for Dale to end the third period with a 66-60 lead. Andrew White put in 12 of his game-high 33 points in the period.

“He just took over the game in the second half,” Thomas Dale coach Eddie Goss said of White, who had to please the Clemson recruiter who witnessed his performance. “We told him to stay solid with his shot. We ran the offense so he and Malcolm [King] could get the ball. We want the ball to go through them.”

In the fourth, King (16 points) sandwiched a couple of two-pointers around a 3-pointer from Airek Green (20 points) as Dale forced a Monarchs coach Ksaan Brown timeout with 4:21 to go.

MBK, ranked fifth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, still had fight left.

The Monarchs went on a 10-0 bolt. A trey from Jaquan Daily (13 points), an easy two from King-Davis, another bonus ball by Karsene Denard (12 points) and two free throws by Deshaun Morman (17 points) had MBK within striking distance at 2:39.

But Rashaad Jordan, White and Green put in key field goals down the stretch for No. 3 Dale to hold the Monarchs off.

Dale looks to have second place in the Central District wrapped up with two wins over Meadowbrook, a two-game lead in the loss column over Meadowbrook with three district games left to play against Prince George, Colonial Heights and Matoaca. The Knights would have to lose all three of those games, and MBK would have to win out to take second place.

“It was one of those good team efforts which we’ve got to have going down the road and looking toward regionals,” Goss said. “Hopefully we can get there and make something happen.”

Legend: Hannah Robbins, Dale, 2/8/10

HANNAH ROBBINS
Thomas Dale Knights

Look at Hannah Robbins‘ tall stature and sparkly smile, no way she’s quick enough and tough enough to score goals.

Think again.

Robbins used surprising quickness and speed to outrace defenses, or used her body to outmuscle defenses to the tune of 22 goals, far and way a team high.

The three-time region champs have a good shot at four since Robbins is only a junior with many returnees along with her.

Legend: Anna Rollins, 2/8/10

ANNA ROLLINS
Thomas Dale Knights

In field hockey, one or two goals can spell doom.

It was Anna Rollins‘ job to make sure that didn’t happen to the Thomas Dale Knights.

The terrific defender had another excellent season as the Knights routinely shut out opponents (13) or surrendered one goal.

Only in the state quarterfinals did Dale give up more than one goal.

Rollins was also a key on corners, delivering nifty passes to fellow all-DigitalSports pick Hannah Robbins.

Legend: Kristen Carter, Dale, 2/8/10

KRISTEN CARTER
Thomas Dale Knights

When the lights are on, sometimes players step to the forefront, some don’t.

Thomas Dale’s Kristen Carter is definitely not the latter.

The senior stepped forward to help make sure Thomas Dale kept its state tournament appearance streak alive.

She had a big assist in the 3-1 region quarter win over James River, and scored the first goal in the semifinal win over Maggie Walker GS.

Her free-hitting ability rivaled anyone.
