Spring Sensations: Bill Cullen, 6/19/09

BILL CULLEN
Thomas Dale

Central District coaches are tired of Bill Cullen.

But they get one more year of him.

The junior outfielder/pitcher made play after play to lead Thomas Dale to the Central District regular-season title and the region semifinals.

Every time Cullen stepped on the bump, it was a solid performance.

At the plate, it was the same for the speedster.

He had a cycle this season among many other big games, including an RBI in a big 2-0 win over Matoaca late in the season that all-but clinched the hardware.

Spring Sensations: Lacey Waldrop, 6/18/09

LACEY WALDROP
Thomas Dale Knights

Ok, what Lacey Waldrop is doing at such a young age is ridiculous.

She’s now a two-time all-DigitalSports pick, along with being all-Central Region and all-Metro.

Her strikeout totals are absurd but are becoming routine. A 12- or 13-K game for the Knight is a quiet day.

What’s ever worse for competitors is that Waldrop is not satisfied with her performance. Not even close.

“I’m really going to work this offseason,” said Waldrop, who is still looking to take the Knights past the first round of regionals. “I want to get my pitches faster. I want the ball to be fast.

“Some of my junk pitches are more off speed, but I want to get them all together to be the best that I can be and hopefully we can go farther.”

Spring Sensations: Lauryn Nanny, 6/18/09

LAURYN NANNY
Thomas Dale Knights

The Central District used to be Prince George’s in recent history. Hands down.

Now a group of players have made things much more interesting as Thomas Dale as plowed to the top to share the mantel.

One of those is Lauryn Nanny, the senior corner infielder.

Her bat is lethal, and fielding is just as solid. Randolph-Macon will be getting a player ready to contribute right away.

Spring Sensations: Will Bates, 6/17/09

WILL BATES
Thomas Dale Knights

Will Bates is probably one of the easiest player-of-the-year picks there is.

No disrespect to the other all-DigitalSports members, it’s just how dominant and important Bates was to an undefeated team.

The midfielder drew tight coverage and four- to six-eyeball attention every time he attempted to step on the field.

Rightfully so. The 6-0, 185-pounder was so dangerous for the Knights.

The accolades? Here’s a few. Four-year starter, state champion as a freshman on a team that he started on that included several older players now in college.

Bates is a U.S. National Team player, has been for a few years now. He will continue his career at Virginia and has aspirations to play the highest level of soccer.

The best thing about it? He always gives his teammates and those who helped him get to this point their due.

“Being named district player of the year and region player of the year, it’s a great honor,” Bates said. “But overall the team has done well. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. The team is great. The guys are fun to play with.

“A lot of credit to my family and the coach [Mark Fowler], they pushed me throughout my four years and made me become a better player.

Spring Sensations: Daniel Comer, 6/17/09

DANIEL COMER
Thomas Dale Knights

Daniel Comer didn’t have the year he wanted to. But it wasn’t his fault.

Injuries ravaged the whole Thomas Dale team, including Comer, who played just about half of the season.

The excellent forward is just too good to leave off of this list, as Dale went 16-1 this year.

N.C. State will have his services for the next four years, as the Knights have two ACC players in Comer and POY Will Bates (Virginia).

Spring Sensations: Tiffany Vandecker, 6/16/09

TIFFANY VANDECKER
Thomas Dale

It seems like Tiffany Vandecker has been at Thomas Dale for ages.

So fittingly, when she became a senior, her key teammates were the young ones.

Vandecker led her youthful team to two Central District titles and on the brink of Thomas Dale’s first state tournament appearance in girls soccer.

The Knights fell in a heartbreaking 2-1, three-OT loss to eventual state finalist Mills Godwin.

The play of Vandecker, a first-team all-Central District pick, in the midfield helped jumpstart the Knights and hold the Eagles in check until the very end of the contest.

Bates an All-American, 6/15/09

Will Bates just got a cherry on his sundae.

The all-everything soccer standout at Thomas Dale was just named a Parade All-American.

“It’s been a good four years between winning a state championship and doing well throughout high school,” Bates said. “I give a lot of credit to my family for pushing me day in and day out, as well as my coaches.

“The team’s been great. We’ve had a great team for four years. To earn an honor like that is a great personal goal but overall the team’s done well in general.”

Bates was a four-year starter at Dale as the Knights captured the state crown in his freshman season, 2006.

This year he was the Central District and Central Region player of the year, and is a sure-fire all-DigitalSports and all-Metro POY as well.

He’s the second Dale student-athlete to receive the honor, as running back Ken Oxendine turned the feat in 1993 before starring as a Virginia Tech Hokie and playing in the NFL.

“I actually didn’t know too much about the honor before this,” Bates said. “I’ve never dreamed of it. But it’s nice to have it now.”
