Girls basketball, 2/20: Firsts for Thomas Dale

PETERSBURG – Don’t go too far back, just recent Thomas Dale past will do.

From track and field standouts like Alex Tatu and Dennis Boone, to title-taking football, softball, soccer, field hockey and boys basketball teams, the Knights’ athletic program is pretty special.

Then there is girls basketball. Unbelievably, there were no trophies to shine or dust off in the history of the program.

Now there are a few and maybe more to come, as Dale captured the Central District tournament crown holding off a game Meadowbrook team 53-49 Friday night at Petersburg High School.

The way the contest was progressing, it didn’t look like Dale wouldn’t couple a tournament crown with the regular-season one it clinched what seemed to be ages ago.

After taking a 30-25 lead to the break, the Monarchs won the third period 16-8 behind stellar play from flashy and focused point guard Crystal Smith.

Smith (game-high 21 points, 10 in the second period) scored five points and dished out an assist as the Monarchs took the momentum.

A deep 3-pointer, Smith’s fifth of the game, gave Meadowbrook a 39-37 lead.

“[Mike] Knight‘s a good coach,” Thomas Dale coach Kevin Coffey said. “He came out with a good gameplan. We were fortunate enough to keep our head. We made some huge shots at some big times.”

Andrea Hobbs (11 points) scored four straight points as the lead seesawed back to Dale.

Then sensational sophomore Ka’lia Johnson (team-high 16 points) split the lane for an old-fashioned three-point play as Dale led 47-43 for the most breathing room it had since it won the first quarter 21-10.

Katrina Marks answered with a bucket of her own for Meadowbrook, but Alyssa Frye (12 points) followed a Dale miss to get the four-point advantage back.

Taylor Bradley knocked in four free throws down the stretch to hold off a Monarchs team Knight has been looking for all season.

“It took a whole year to get them going,” said Knight, as his Monarchs will host Manchester Monday at 7 p.m. in one of the Central Region’s most interesting first-round games. “For how our season went, I’m happy we’re playing good basketball now.”

So is Coffey, as his Knights moved to 23-1 with 17 wins over district foes and two titles to show for it.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Coffey said. “It’s been long overdue at Dale. Everybody’s enjoying the ride.”

Region wrestling, 2/15: Rapids outlast Hawks

by Derek “Big D” Nash
DigitalSports Contributor

In a weekend where you would think the James River Rapids were going to run away with the Central Region wrestling tournament title, the Hanover Hawks put plenty of pressure on the Rapids.

But in the end the Rapids still prevailed as the Team Champs!!!

Going into Saturday night’s finals, Hanover had to win several individual titles to take away the team trophy from the Rapids.

After Spencer Alexander and Gabe Lavey won the 103- and 125-pound titles, respectively, it looked as if the Hawks had a good chance of taking it all. Then on came the Rapids!!

Jordan Dix and Jared Anongos won back-to-back titles at 130 and 135 to secure the championship.

Anongos beat Hawks standout Ben Wilson in front of a packed house.

I have to give credit to Wilson. He came out from the get go and didn’t back down from Anongos, who won his fourth region Title. This was Dix’s third Title.

Earlier in the day, Anongos wrestled Josh Clark (Matoaca) in what was a much-anticipated semifinal between two state-ranked opponents.

Anongos came out on top 2-1, which became the biggest topic of the day, in what figured to be a low scoring affair where both wrestlers were waiting on the other one to make a mistake.

With the score 0-0 after the first period Clark won the coin toss and chose down to start the second. His escape gave him a 1-0 lead going into the third period because both wrestlers stayed neutral the rest of the second period.

Clark was warned for stalling and then Anongos was given a point for a second stalling call on Clark, which brought out a nasty war from the crowd. Clark then decided to let Anongos up, which put Anongos up 2-1, in hopes that he would take him down.

That didn’t happen and after a positive/negative emotional war from the crowd the two wrestlers shook hands, hugged and walked off the mat.

The finals had some really good matches to entertain the crowd.

In round four of Cody Allala (Hopewell) and Blake Roulo (Matoaca) at 145 pounds was again supposed to be the match everyone had been waiting for. The match again didn’t disappoint as Allala won the bout 4-0.

A majority of his points came on a 3-point near fall late in the second period as he tilted Roulo onto his back. A third period escape by Allala gave him the 4-0 lead and the victory.

Allala’s brother Clint won the 160-pound title by pinning Zach Burholder of Clover Hill. The pin was the only pin of the finals.

Matt Brunke (Mills Godwin) held on to beat Cosby standout Austin Coburn 4-3 as Coburn was trying to turn Brunke late in the match for some near fall points, but couldn’t finish the turn.

Finally, the 285 bout was a rematch of last weekend’s Central District final between LaRoyce Lewis (Prince George) and Cam Granderson (Hopewell). Granderson won the district title 4-2 over Lewis, but this time it was Lewis prevailing 3-2 for the regional title.

GREAT MATCHES FROM ALL THESE GUYS!!!

In a weekend full of surprises, upsets and emotions I have to say that the Central Region tournament did not disappoint.

Next weekend is the big weekend as all 56 Central Region wrestlers who qualified carry their headgear to states in hopes of big dreams. I feel as if we can have an outstanding end to such a great year.

GOOD LUCK CENTRAL REGION!

Side note: I want to personally thank everyone for all their kind words and prayers that they said to me over the weekend and on the centralregionwrestling.net forum. I’m looking forward to having this gastric bypass and again THANK YOU CENTRAL REGION.

Boys basketball, 2/13: No. 9 TD tops No. 8 Devils

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

CHESTERThomas Dale returned the favor.

A few weeks back, Hopewell jumped on the Knights, building a 19-point lead before holding on for a four-point win.

Friday night, the Knights ran out to an 18-point lead and went on to defeat the Blue Devils 74-61 in a matchup of DigitalSports Top 10 teams.

Ninth-ranked Dale got 10 points from Andrew White in a first period that it finished with a 25-7 lead. Hopewell couldn’t get anything to go offensively, mostly from the outside.

“In the first half, we had good shot opportunities, we just couldn’t make a shot,” Hopewell coach William Simon said. “I wanted to see them attack the basket more.”

Said Dale coach Eddie Goss: “They jumped up down there and got up 19. We really worked on shutting down their offense.”

One of the keys Goss mentioned was Calvin Ruiz. Hopewell’s guard had 22 points on the Knights in the previous meeting, including four 3-pointers; but he didn’t score Friday.

Milton Gholson (13 points) and Pedro Berrios (12) did, as the duo started to find the basket late in the second quarter and early in the third.

A Berrios trey cut the lead to nine, 37-28 in the third, but that’s as close as the No. 8 Blue Devils would get.

One factor was Dale’s Malcolm King. The second semester addition has been a huge factor for Thomas Dale.

“Our kids are playing well with Malcolm King back. If we had him all year there’s no telling where we would be,” Goss said. “He’s such a team leader. He makes a difference. He takes some pressure off some kids.”

And puts pressure on other teams. His rebounding ability inside added to Dale’s fastbreak, as Ariek Green (12 points) and White (game-high 20 points) took advantage of open-floor opportunities.

King can score a bit himself, putting in 15 points, 11 in the first half.

“Malcolm’s a steady influence for them,” Hopewell coach William Simon said. “Anytime you can add a steady influence, it will improve your team. It’s a great addition.”

Hopewell’s also had an addition, with JV call-up McKindley King scoring a team-high 16 points.

But it wasn’t enough to tackle the red-hot Knights, who have won six of their last seven games, including a three-point loss to unbeaten and No. 1 Petersburg.

“If we defend, rebound and execute, we’ll do well,” Goss said. “If you told me at the beginning of the year that’s where we’d be, I would’ve been surprised.”

Hopewell 7 13 16 25 – 61

District wrestling, 2/7/09

 by Derek Nash
DigitalSports Contributor

What a night at the 2009 Central District Wrestling Tournament!!!

All I can say is I may have witnessed one of the greatest matches ever!!!

Cody Allala vs. Blake Roulo, Round 3 (I don’t count the preseason meeting at the Super 32).

1st period: Cody gets take down with about 30 some seconds left and rides Blake out. (2-0 Allala)

2nd period: Cody takes bottom and gets an early escape. Period ends with both wrestlers on feet. (3-0 Allala)

3rd period: Roulo takes bottom and gets an escape. With about 20 seconds left Blake gets an out-of-bounds take down, which was extremely controversial, and the ref calls out of bounds…no takedown. Time runs out with both wrestlers on their feet. (Allala wins 3-1)

Now to explain to everyone the controversy I put a post on the Central Region Forum that I’m also including in this article and it reads:

“You know we can get on here and complain and fight and argue and whine on rather Roulo had a takedown or not. Just remember folks Referee George Jokish (sp) had the best seat in the house. He explained afterwards that yes it was 2 for when they landed out of bounds but Blake had stepped on the line first which means both him and Cody were out.

It was such a wonderful match by two hard competitors and honestly Central Region it may have been one of the best matches I’ve ever witnessed in my 11 years of being a wrestling fan.

Both these guys will have another barn burner next week at James River. I GUARANTEE!!!”

I hope this is able to put some minds at ease for wondering what the referee was seeing that we weren’t. I talked to both wrestlers after the match and they both had some positive things to say.

DNash: Guys what was going through your mind on the controversial takedown?
Roulo: “My feet are in, his hips were down, I got a takedown.”
Allala: “I was confident on my feet even if we went to OT.”

DNash: What is your mindset for the next two weekends?
Roulo: “I’m looking forward to Regions. In the finals of the Big Blue (Christiansburg tourney) there was a questionable takedown there. I should be able to take him down at Regions and States.
Allala: “Don’t overlook anyone…take one match at a time…be more focused and bust my **** more at practice this week. Regions right now don’t matter to me as much as winning states.”

As you can see Central Region we are going to be treated to what I believe will be two more fantastic matchups before the season’s over.

Team Champ: Thomas Dale
Runner-up: Dinwiddie

Champs/Runner-ups
103: Joey Plutro (Dinwiddie), Michael Peters (Matoaca)
112: Jonathan *** (Hopewell), Jason Schrinel (Prince George)
119: Alex Turley (Thomas Dale), Josh Burch (Prince George)
125: Tavaras Johnson (Dinwiddie), David Martino (Col Heights)
130: Matt Blaszak (Col Heights), Jarrett Fields (Thomas Dale)
135: Josh Clarke (Matoaca), Paden Rudd (Thomas Dale)
140: Brandon Diamond (Thomas Dale), James Tuppince (Meadowbrook)
145: Cody Allala (Hopewell), Blake Roulo (Matoaca)
152: Daniel Rogerson (Dinwiddie), Xavier Edwards (Matoaca)
160: Clint Allala (Hopewell), Chris **** (Col Heights)
171: John Dommert (Thomas Dale), Kevin Kidd (Dinwiddie)
189: Mike Edmunds (Thomas Dale), Tony Venable (Petersburg)
215: Dylan Krupp (Col Heights), Montrell Coleman (Prince George)
285: Cam Granderson (Hopewell), LaRoyce Lewis (Prince George)

Most Outstanding Wrestler: Cody Allala (Hopewell 145)

Opinions
There was another rough call made at the end of the 2nd period in the 130-pound weight class.

Jarrett Fields had an ankle pick for a takedown but the ref said time had run out and so therefore he didn’t reward a “2” which I wasn’t too sure if I agreed with it.

I want to praise the 285-pound weight class in the Central District. The final was a great match with Granderson winning 4-2. Both him and LaRoyce are super kids and just really good down-to-earth guys. Rogerson of Dinwiddie showed heart and soul as he finished his match with a bad knee. You could tell he was hurting but elected to go on….Congrats, Daniel.

Well, ladies and gentlemen it was a great day at the Central District and I hope everyone else had great tournaments, too. This is a big week coming up for the boys in preparing for regionals. Good luck to all!!!

Wrestling at James River will start at both noon on Friday and Saturday Feb 13th and 14th. It is a beautiful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend!!!

Central District Preview – Feb. 6

Hello, to all wrestling fans out there!

This is Derek “BIG D” Nash, an 11-year wrestling fan from Thomas Dale High School. I’ve been given the opportunity to start a wrestling blog for DigitalSports, which will also include BIG D’s Wrestler of the Week Award.

Although the season is coming to an end, I figured it was never too late to start one right now. I want to thank Stephen Lewis for inspiring me to do this for the site.

Check in with me every now and then for my thoughts, points and tidbits. If anyone would ever like to personally email me you can do so at dsnsportstd@yahoo.com.

2009 Central District Tournament Preview

The Central District is loaded this year with tons of talent. We have kids who not only can compete at the Central Region but also the state Group AAA level, and I don’t mean just qualify and get their name put on a shirt.

I’m saying we have a handful or two that could seriously make some noise come February 20th and the 21st.

Team wise Thomas Dale, not being biased, is still the team to beat in this tourney. Even with a handful or so kids in the finals, they have plenty of kids who will wrestle back to place high enough to qualify for regionals.

After the Knights will be a second-place battle between Hopewell and Matoaca. Although both schools will have finalists, Hopewell may come out with a few champs more than Matoaca.

I’m not sure how Hopewell will do in the wrestle back department. Matoaca is a little deeper than Hopewell.

Dinwiddie is another tough team to reckon with. They have some solid kids who will lead them to a top-four team finish. Following these four you’ll have Prince George and Colonial Heights battling for 5th/6th, with Meadowbrook and Petersburg coming in the last two slots.

Here are the district champs in my opinion (note: I haven’t seen the seeds yet): 103: Joey Plutro (Dinwiddie); 112: Jonathan *** (Hopewell); 119: Alex Turley (Thomas Dale); 125: James White (Thomas Dale); 130: Matt Blaszak (Colonial Heights); 135: Josh Clarke (Matoaca); 140: Brandon Diamond (Thomas Dale); 145: Cody Allala (Hopewell) or Blake Roulo (Matoaca), This is too hard to call folks; 152: Daniel Rogerson (Dinwiddie); 160: Clint Allala (Hopewell); 171: John Dommert (Thomas Dale); 189: Austin Akins (Matoaca); 215: Dylan Krupp (Colonial Heights); 285: Cam Granderson (Hopewell)

Wrestlers to watch include: Wallace (Hopewell 103), Schrinel (PG 112), Zoller (TD 112), Tuppince (MBK 140), Felter (TD 145), Edwards (Mat 152), Worsham (MBK 160), **** (CH 160), Wingfield (Hopewell 189/215 whichever one he wrestles), Lewis (PG 285) and Oakley (Din 285).

Big D’s Wrestler of the Week: Josh Clarke (Matoaca/Sophomore/135). In the past two weeks Josh finished 1st at the Big Blue, which is a tourney held at Christiansburg. He came back with a 2nd place finish at the Riverbend Free Lance Star Super 32. His loss was to Jared Anongos of James River, the top 135 just ahead of Josh in the region.

He had a big 3-1 win over Ben Wilson of Hanover with literally just about a second left in regulation.

Good luck to all wrestlers in the Central District this weekend and to others from Dominion, Capital and Colonial Districts. Let’s make noise at regions and states!!!
