Baseball player of the week, 4/30: Bill Cullen

Bill Cullen, Thomas Dale

Year: Senior  Age: 18

Position: Pitcher/First Base

Performance: Cullen hit for the cycle and had seven RBI in one game, was the winning pitcher in a 3-2 win over Prince George and had two RBI in another in a 3-0 week for Dale.

Funniest teammate: Mike Green. He just does crazy stuff, he’s always outgoing.”

10 K’s or a HR: “10 K’s. More outs in an inning, easier to get out.”

Who he’d want at the plate, other than himself: “Mike Green. Mike always puts the ball in play. He rarely strikes out.”

On season: “We started off the season pretty strong. We had a tough loss to Manchester. But they’re No. 1 in the region. We fought ’em good. It was 6-5. We played good that game. Dinwiddie, we weren’t mentally in it. We were there, but we were just playing the game. We’ve had our ups and downs but right now we’re rolling.”

Dale lost to Dinwiddie in the first matchup, but beat them Thursday, April 30 on Cullen’s two-run walk-off homer.

Favorite subject: “Math.”

On coach Chris Marshall:
“Ever since he’s been in the gate we’ve been playing good for him. He’s been coaching us well and we’ve just been winning.”

One wish: “Play in game seven of the World Series and be the winning pitcher.”

“Derek Jeter.”

Softball player of the week, 4/30: Lacey Waldrop

Lacey Waldrop, Thomas Dale

Year: Sophomore   Position: Pitcher

Performance: Waldrop dropped in 53 strikeouts, including a 20-K effort in a 3-0, 8-inning win over Prince George. She one-hit Hopewell with 17 Ks and gave up no runs in three games.

Funniest teammate:
“That’s a hard one. It’s Lauryn [Nanny], Alexa [Tuck] and Logan [Tollison]. All put together they make me laugh 100 percent of the time.”

On college:
“I want to go to the University of Florida. That’s my goal.”

Difference from freshman to sophomore year: “I think we have more hitting. But we came out thinking we were going to do great, and we got too big of a head.”

Region competition: “I think the region has a lot of good pitchers this year. Especially [Lee-Davis’] Kelly Heinz, she throws crazy hard. I’m excited about playing in the regions.”

On Central District:
“I like it because it’s more competition. Now we have four other teams that get us together before regionals.”

Favorite class: “Sports literature.”

Who’d she want at the plate, other than her: “Probably Lauryn. She’s been hitting really, really well this year.”

Dale baseball guy she’d love to strike out:
“The whole team.”

Facebook or MySpace: “Facebook.”

Toughest opponent: “Pitcher is Kelly Heinz. Batter, I haven’t gotten to pitch against any of the region ones. Probably if I had to face any of the batters on my team, I would struggle.”

On coach Dennis Jones:
“He’s been doing good. He got coach of the region last year. He does all he can to help us out. He’s always in good spirits. He gets on us when we need a push.”

Baseball, 4/28/09: Dale capitalizes on miscues

Thomas Dale plated eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-5 win over Matoaca in baseball Tuesday evening.

The Warriors, ranked third in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, had all kinds of trouble, putting Knight after Knight on base as fourth-ranked Dale took advantage.

Matoaca walked 12 Dale batters and had seven errors, uncharacteristic of Fred Stoots‘ team.

“When you let a good team get base runners they make you pay for it,” Stoots said. “They played well and executed and we didn’t.”

Matoaca outhit Dale 9-5, receiving three RBI from Logan Walker. But the miscues and Bill Cullen‘s seven strikeouts paced Dale to the important Central District triumph, including Brendan Schnell‘s three RBI for the Knights.

“We always try to play hard against Matoaca,” Cullen said. “They’re just our rivals. Ever since day one, my freshman year, we’ve been always trying to beat them for the district title.”

Boys soccer, 4/28/09: TD holds off Matoaca

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

A 0-0 match went to 2-0 in the blink of an eye, as Thomas Dale topped Matoaca Tuesday night in boys soccer.

Matoaca, fresh off a No. 9 ranking in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, gave Thomas Dale all it could handle, with 10 players no less.

Matoaca’s top player, Mason Page, received a red card about 25 minutes into the match. But the Warriors still managed to keep the No. 1 Knights scoreless for a lengthy time period.

A lot of credit has to go to defender and captain Dillon Prendergast, who marked the sensational Will Bates the entire first half, limiting the U.Va.-bound forward’s opportunities.

“I’m really happy with the effort,” Matoaca coach Corey McConville said. “Especially playing 10-men down. The effort’s there … [we need to work on] our one touch and get into more of a rhythm.”

Dale struggled to find its rhythm, but things started to fall in sync once Dale coach Mark Fowler moved Bates to midfield.

It took some defenders out of areas and allowed Dale to strike.

First was Joseph Stover, who converted with 12:30 to go in the match off a beauty of a feed from Jack Bates.

A couple of minutes later, Loudon Phillips barreled down the field and outmuscled a Warrior defender for an easy goal and 2-0 final.

“They wanted to come out here and win tonight,” Stover said. “They were a great side tonight.”

Thomas Dale won its seventh straight game, knocking off Matoaca – the last team to defeat the Knights – 10-1 Tuesday evening in softball.

Sophomore pitcher Lacey Waldrop continued her stellar effort in the circle, striking out 13 batters for TD, ranked fourth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10.

Waldrop carried a no-hitter into the last inning before Erin Chaney broke it up with a single with two outs in the seventh inning for ninth-ranked Matoaca.

Dale got six hits, two from Lauryn Nanny (double, triple), as the Knights took advantage of seven Matoaca errors.

“I came out here knowing that we had lost last time,” Nanny said. “I wanted to come out here and show them that we were a force to be reckoned with.”

Freshman pitcher Melissa Skoff led Matoaca with 10 strikeouts.

Breaking news, 4/26: Ka’lia Johnson commits to Duke

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

How good is Ka’lia Johnson? Duke good.

Thomas Dale’s rising junior committed to Duke to continue her basketball career this weekend after a lengthy visit.

“It’s a great school academically besides basketball,” Johnson said. “I’m always looking for if I can put this school on a resume’ and get a good job.

“It’s not just basketball, because any school I choose is going to have a good basketball squad.”

The 5-9 point guard averaged 17 points per game on her way to Central District and Central Region player of the year honors.

She’s a two-time all-DigitalSports pick and two-time first-team all-Metro selection.

“It’s been my school since fourth grade,” Johnson said. “It’s my dream school.”

Family Twist

Ka’lia is not the only Johnson with college news.

Her older brother Jay Johnson, a former Dale standout, just signed with Phieffer in North Carolina.

Jay Johnson has spent the past two seasons at Patrick Henry Community College.

The twist? Jay’s first game is at Duke this fall.

“I’ll be there for sure,” Ka’lia said.

Baseball
No. 8 Thomas Dale 12, Meadowbrook 0

* Freshman Gabriel Togna hurled a five-inning no-hitter with
five strikeouts, making it 10 straight innings of no-hit ball for the
JV call-up.

He’s 3-0. That’s not all for Dale.

The Knights also had sensational junior Bill Cullen hit for the
cycle in the same game, in four at-bats no less.

First came the single,
then the home run, the double and the triple. He also had seven RBI.

“A no-no by itself is rare enough,” Dale coach Chris Marshall said, “But both of those happening on the same night is against all odds.”
